Cad To Line: Convert imported CAD geometry to Revit detail lines
BIMStudio's Cad To Line plugin converts imported DWG/CAD linework into native Revit detail lines, eliminating CAD dependencies and improving model performance.

Imported CAD files in Revit are a necessary evil. They bring reference geometry from legacy drawings, consultants, or survey data — but they also bring performance problems, layer management headaches, and non-native geometry that does not behave like Revit elements. Cad To Line by BIMStudio converts imported CAD linework into native Revit detail lines, letting you remove the CAD import while keeping the geometry.
What Cad To Line does
The plugin reads the linework from an imported or linked CAD file and recreates it as native Revit detail lines in the active view. Lines, arcs, circles, and polylines are all converted with their positions preserved. After conversion, you can delete the original CAD import.
Key capabilities:
- Full linework conversion — converts lines, arcs, circles, and polylines.
- Layer mapping — maps CAD layers to Revit line styles.
- Position accuracy — converted lines match the original CAD geometry exactly.
- View-specific output — detail lines are created in the active view.
- Batch conversion — convert all linework from a CAD import at once.
How it works
- Import or link the CAD file into a Revit view.
- Open Cad To Line from the BIMStudio ribbon tab.
- Select the CAD import to convert.
- Click Convert — CAD linework becomes native Revit detail lines.
- Delete the original CAD import to improve model performance.
Why BIM teams use Cad To Line
Remove CAD dependencies
Linked CAD files need to be maintained, updated, and distributed with the model. Converting to native lines removes that dependency.
Better model performance
CAD imports add significant overhead to Revit file size and rendering time. Native detail lines are lighter and faster.
Editable geometry
Imported CAD geometry cannot be edited with Revit tools. After conversion, every line is a native Revit element that you can move, trim, extend, and style.
Cleaner printing
CAD imports sometimes produce unexpected line weights and colors when printed. Native Revit lines follow your line style settings consistently.
Who benefits most
- BIM modelers incorporating reference geometry from legacy CAD drawings.
- Architects tracing over survey or consultant CAD files.
- Drafters cleaning up imported linework for documentation.
- BIM managers enforcing "no CAD imports" standards while preserving needed geometry.
