Column Rebar: Automate structural rebar detailing in Revit

Detailing rebar for structural columns in Revit is one of the most repetitive tasks in a structural BIM workflow. Each column needs main bars, stirrups, and clear cover — configured correctly for the section size, concrete grade, and office standards. Column Rebar automates that process so your team spends time engineering, not clicking.

What Column Rebar does

Select one or more structural columns in your Revit model, configure the rebar parameters, and the plugin generates a complete rebar cage — main bars, stirrups, and ties — placed precisely inside each column. The output is native Revit rebar, fully schedulable and ready for shop drawings.

Key capabilities:

  • Batch placement — rebar multiple columns at once instead of one at a time.
  • Configurable bar sizes — pick main bar diameter, stirrup size, and spacing from your project standards.
  • Clear cover control — set cover distances per face or apply a uniform value.
  • Stirrup configurations — single, double, or diamond ties depending on column section.
  • Standard compliance — outputs follow typical detailing rules used in Vietnamese and international structural practice.

How it works

  1. Select the target columns in a plan or 3D view.
  2. Open Column Rebar from the BIMStudio ribbon tab.
  3. Set parameters: main bar size, stirrup spacing, cover, and hook angle.
  4. Click Generate — the plugin places all rebar elements inside each selected column.
  5. Review in a section view and adjust if needed.

The generated rebar is standard Revit Rebar elements. They appear in rebar schedules, can be tagged, and export correctly to IFC.

Why structural teams use this plugin

Hours saved per floor

Manual rebar detailing for a single column can take 15–30 minutes when you account for placing bars, setting constraints, and verifying spacing. Column Rebar reduces that to seconds per column. On a typical floor with 40+ columns, the time savings compound quickly.

Consistency across the model

When rebar is placed manually, inconsistencies creep in — different cover values, misaligned stirrup spacing, or forgotten ties. The plugin applies the same configuration to every selected column, eliminating human variation.

Fewer coordination issues

Rebar that is modeled accurately in 3D reduces clashes with MEP penetrations and adjacent structural members. Coordination teams catch conflicts earlier because the rebar is actually in the model, not just shown on 2D detail drawings.

Who benefits most

  • Structural engineers producing rebar models for shop drawings.
  • BIM modelers tasked with detailing structural frames.
  • Quantity surveyors who need schedulable rebar for takeoff.
  • Project managers looking to reduce structural modeling timelines.
